GTA 6 takes place in Leonida, Rockstar's version of Florida, and Rockstar has named six regions so far: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Each one is a parody of a real part of Florida, from Miami down to the Keys and up to the Georgia border. There's no official map yet, so this guide sticks to what Rockstar has described and shown, and flags what comes from leaks. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026.

The real-world matches for Vice City and the Keys are obvious and Rockstar has all but said them. The others come from the press reading the footage and descriptions. They fit, but Rockstar hasn't confirmed them.
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar hasn't published a size in square miles or kilometers. What it has said:
- Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, called it a very big map and the largest, most densely populated world the studio has built. He said nobody on the team knows all of it.
- According to people who attended hands-off previews in July 2026, Nelson told them the map is about twice the size of GTA 5's, around three times Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area, and that Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos. Those numbers come to us second-hand, from outlets like Vice and the creator TGG, not from Rockstar's own channels.
- Previews also mention hundreds of enterable interiors, without an exact count.
Figures you'll see elsewhere, like 125 square kilometers or "70 percent bigger than GTA 5", are fan estimates built partly on leaked footage.
How the in-game map works
- Fog of war. Areas you haven't visited stay hidden on the map, as in GTA 5 and Red Dead 2. Nelson confirmed this to Famitsu.
- Waypoints and hideouts. You hold a button to set a destination, and gang hideouts appear on the map. Hideouts change as the story moves through chapters.
- New minimap. The Extended Look showed a redesigned minimap with a pink waypoint, and a pause map with satellite-style imagery.
- Getting around. No fast-travel menu has been confirmed. Previews mention buses, trains, taxis and a ride-hailing app, and a separate app that delivers your car to you. See our personal vehicles guide.
What about the fan maps?
The best-known community map is the GTA VI Mapping Project. It's impressive work, but it combines official footage with material from the 2022 leak and a large map leak in August 2026, so it isn't an official map. The same goes for county names you may see, like Vice-Dale or Lummox. Two names do appear in official footage: "Kelly County" on road signs and a police badge, and a "Vice Dale" police agency. Rockstar hasn't explained either.
Where the story starts
Nelson told Famitsu the story begins in the Keys, which matches Jason's bio: he lives there, in a property owned by the smuggler Brian Heder. Lucia starts in the Leonida Penitentiary.
Still unknown
- An official map. Rockstar usually releases one with the game or just before.
- Whether there are regions beyond the six named ones
- Where most named places actually sit on the map
