GTA 6 has fuel, three vehicle slots to start and trunk gun lockers. How garages, refueling, loot space and getting your car back work.

GTA 6 has fuel, you start with space for only three personal vehicles, and your car doubles as your armory. Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, confirmed all three in September 2026 interviews. This guide covers how owning a car works: garages, filling up, storing guns and loot, and getting your car back when you've left it somewhere.

Yes, GTA 6 has fuel

Cars use fuel and can run low. To fill up you pull into a gas station and hold R2 on PlayStation for about ten seconds. Nelson showed it in his TGG interview and called it pretty fast for a fill-up, and he's right. It's closer to a pit stop than a chore.

Gas stations also repair damage. Where fuel will probably matter most is the car you grab in a hurry during a getaway, which might have half a tank or less.

Three cars to start, more with garages

Early on you can own three personal vehicles. To own more, you buy garages around the map. When you're full, you sell a car to make room, the same way you had to let horses go in Red Dead Redemption 2.

You can buy garages, but not safehouses. The two garages Rockstar has shown both come from editions:

Rockstar says every personal garage has a weapon locker and a stash for stolen goods you can sell to a fence.

Your car is your gun locker

Every vehicle has a weapon storage crate in the trunk. That matters because rifles and shotguns can't be hidden on your body any more. You keep them in a trunk, a garage or hideout locker, or at Ammu-Nation. A vehicle menu opens the trunk and hood and puts the roof down on convertibles.

We cover what you can carry on foot in our weapon carry limit guide.

Loot space depends on the vehicle

Loot is physical in GTA 6, and bigger vehicles hold more of it. Bikes carry almost nothing, cars hold a few duffel bags, and vans and trucks hold more. For a robbery, the getaway vehicle decides how much you walk away with.

Getting your car back

In GTA 5's story mode, losing your car could mean a trip to the impound lot. In GTA 6, an app called Scooter Bros delivers or recovers your personal vehicle. Leave a car abandoned too long, though, and it may get guarded or impounded.

Stolen cars you haven't registered don't count. They show up grey on the radar and vanish when you restart. See how stealing and registering cars works.

Customizing

Pay 'n' Spray only repairs and changes the color. For real modifications you need a tuning shop, and each one has its own specialty: most offer the basics, and some parts are only at specific shops. The Ultimate Edition adds two: Rideout Customs in Vice City for interiors, rims and donk builds, and One-Eyed Willie's on Lake Leonida for off-road work and hand-painted jobs.

What we still don't know

  • Garage prices and how many there are
  • Whether electric cars charge at stations. Previews say there are EVs you can steal, but not how they refuel.
  • Whether Jason and Lucia share one set of vehicle slots
  • How fast different cars burn fuel

For every car shown so far, see the GTA 6 vehicles list.
