Stealing a car in GTA 6 is a small job in itself. Older cars open with a lock pick, luxury cars need a key cloner, newer cars carry a tracker that can give you away, and a stolen car is only yours once you've paid to register it. That's how Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, described it in his September 2026 interviews, and previews from TGG and the French outlet TroisCouleurs back it up. Here's how the whole loop works, from the parked car to the cash.
Step 1: check the car before you touch it
Your phone has an app called Waink that scans cars. Point it at one and it tells you:
- the model and what it's worth
- its security level and which tool you need
- what kind of tracker it has
- how much it would cost to register at Pay 'n' Spray
It's worth scanning first. A car you can't open, or can't afford to register, is just a way to get arrested.
Step 2: get inside

You can't steal everything from the start. Some high-end cars are off limits until you've progressed, and you can't take cars in safe zones, like outside Dre'Quan Priest's club.
Step 3: deal with the tracker
Newer cars carry trackers, and better cars have better ones. The high-tier trackers are tied to speed. While you drive fast they stay quiet. Slow down and they start beeping, and eventually they report where you are.
That changes how you drive away from a theft. In GTA 5 you'd cruise off calmly. In GTA 6, if you've taken a well-protected car, you need to keep moving until you reach someone who can pull the tracker.
If the owner reports the theft, police dispatch creates a Heat zone and searches for the car and for someone matching your description. Swapping to a car they don't know about is the quickest way out.
Step 4: fence it or keep it
Vehicle fences remove trackers and buy cars. Nelson mentioned one called Randy, who asks for specific models. Fences don't all buy the same things, and after you sell a car at one place, that location has a cooldown before it takes another. Damage lowers what you're paid, so drive carefully on the way there.
If you want to keep the car, take it to Pay 'n' Spray and pay the registration fee. After that it's a personal vehicle. Until you do, it shows as a grey icon on the radar and disappears when you restart the game. You can store a stolen car safely before registering it.

- Repairs damage
- Changes the color, which helps you lose Heat
That's all. Nelson said you can basically only change the color there. Anything more elaborate means a tuning shop, and each shop specializes. Rideout Customs does interiors, rims and donk builds, and One-Eyed Willie's on Lake Leonida does off-road work. Both are Ultimate Edition shops, so Standard players will be using other garages that Rockstar hasn't named yet.
Police cars
According to the previews, police cars carry guns and body armor in the trunk, and every one of them has a tracker. Tempting, but expect the police to know exactly where you are.
Quick tips
This is our reading of what Rockstar has described. We'll replace it with tested advice after launch.
- Scan before you steal, especially early on when you only have basic tools.
- On a car with a good tracker, plan the route to the fence before you break in.
- Don't smash windows in busy streets. Picking the lock is slower, but it doesn't bring the police.
- Keep one registered car with no Heat on it for getaways.
