GTA 6 Weapon Carry Limit: How Many Guns Can You Hold?

GTA 6 drops unlimited pockets. What Rockstar North's Rob Nelson confirmed about concealed weapons, long guns, trunk and locker storage, and how it compares to GTA 5 and RDR2.

In GTA 6 you can keep two weapons concealed on you. Rifles and shotguns can't be hidden, so they're visible on your back, and anything you're not carrying stays in your car's trunk, a hideout locker or an Ammu-Nation locker. That comes from Rob Nelson, the head of Rockstar North, in two interviews published in September 2026.

What Rockstar has confirmed

  • Two concealed weapons. Nelson told YouTuber TGG you can carry two concealed weapons at all times without people reacting.
  • Long guns are always visible. In his Famitsu interview he said long guns are "no longer treated as invisible."
  • Storage. Guns you're not carrying go in a vehicle trunk, a hideout locker or an Ammu-Nation locker.
  • People notice. Walk around with a drawn gun and pedestrians will keep their distance or turn on you. A rifle slung on your back gets much less of a reaction than one in your hands.

Nelson's reasoning: strolling through Los Santos with a carbine while nobody reacted never made sense.

What's still unclear

Rockstar hasn't given an exact number of long guns. Several sites say two, and one widely shared post says two long guns, one pistol and one melee weapon. Neither has come from Rockstar, and the second doesn't match what Nelson said about two concealed weapons. We're going with Nelson's own words until the game is out.

Other open questions:

  • Do melee weapons and throwables count toward the limit?
  • Is there an ammo cap per gun?
  • Can you switch guns at any locker, or only the one where you stored them?
  • Do Jason and Lucia share one stash, or does each have their own?

It's clearly modeled on Red Dead 2, with your car taking the place of your horse. Anyone who played RDR2 will recognize the moment they get into a firefight and realize their best rifle is still in the car.

Other weapon changes in the Extended Look

Rockstar's August 27 gameplay showcase showed a few related systems:

  • A single button swaps between your two current guns, without opening the wheel.
  • Weapons and items have separate wheels.
  • You can grab guns dropped by enemies, which covers you when you run out of what you brought.
  • Guns stored in a vehicle trunk were shown directly.

How we'd plan around it

This is our reading of what Rockstar has shown, not a tested strategy. We'll replace it with real advice after launch.

  • Keep a pistol as one of your concealed slots. It's the gun that doesn't get you noticed. Jason's Girardi ES9 and Lucia's Klose K17 are the obvious picks.
  • Park close before a job. If your stash is in the trunk, your car is your armory. Leaving it three blocks away could cost you.
  • Pick your rifle for the mission. A scoped hunting rifle for Grassrivers, something short for the city. Taking everything used to be free. Now you have to choose.
  • Put the gun away in public. Nelson said a drawn gun makes people avoid you or get aggressive, so holster it before you walk into a store.
