GTA 6 has hunting, fishing and a lot of wildlife, from Grassrivers alligators to deer in Mount Kalaga National Park. The most surprising detail so far is that fishing is catch and release only: Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, said keeping fish didn't fit this game. Hunting, on the other hand, is one of the ways to make money. Here's what Rockstar has confirmed about animals, and what people are assuming from Red Dead Redemption 2. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026.
Animals seen so far
Rockstar hasn't published a list of species. These are the animals in its trailers, screenshots and the August 2026 Extended Look:
| Animal | Where it's been seen |
|---|---|
| Alligators | Everywhere. Trailer 1 has animal control pulling one out of a pool and another wandering into a convenience store. Grassrivers screenshots show hunters on an airboat with a dead one. |
| White-tailed deer | Two hunters walking up to their kill in a Mount Kalaga screenshot |
| Florida panther | Mount Kalaga screenshots |
| Wild boar | A TV ad inside the Extended Look shows boar and deer |
| Flamingos and pelicans | Flamingos flying over Grassrivers, pelicans along the coast |
| Sea turtles | A Leonida Keys reef screenshot. Rockstar's description of the Keys mentions them too. |
| Dolphins | The Trailer 2 yacht scene |
| Green iguana | A street screenshot |
| Dogs | A pettable dog in the Extended Look's opening apartment scene, and a chihuahua in a purple tutu with fairy wings |
Fan lists go further, with foxes, raccoons, manatees, sharks and snakes identified frame by frame. Some of those are likely right, but they're fan identifications, and some lists also draw on the 2022 leak.
Fishing: catch and release only
In his September 2026 interview with the YouTuber TGG, Nelson said fishing is as detailed as in Red Dead Redemption 2, but you release everything you catch. Keeping fish, he said, didn't fit this game. You can inspect a catch before letting it go, and there are fishing challenges and collectibles, but it isn't meant to make you money.
Jason is shown fishing with his friend Cal Hampton in Trailer 2 material. Rockstar describes the Ultimate Edition's Shitzu Squalo as a boat for fishing in Gambit Bay, and Mount Kalaga's official description lists fishing alongside hunting and off-road trails.
Hunting: a way to make money
Hunting works the other way. Nelson said it's one of the ways to earn money, and that it's introduced by a new character who already knows Jason and hasn't appeared in any footage yet. You can inspect animals you hunt. The best-known hunting grounds are Mount Kalaga National Park, which Rockstar sells on its hunting, and the Grassrivers swamp.
How you turn a kill into cash hasn't been explained. Skinning, pelts, crafting and legendary animals are all things people expect from Red Dead 2, but none of them have been confirmed.
Dogs, and studying animals
- You can pet or scold dogs, and study them to learn the breed. Previews mention giving them treats.
- Studying a species you haven't seen before adds it to an in-game checklist, much like Red Dead 2's compendium.
- Nelson told TGG you can knock a dog walker's poop bag out of their hand and throw it at people. He wasn't joking.
- Previews also mention a zoo you can visit.
There's no confirmed system for owning a pet. Some trailer scenes suggest Jason and Lucia live with a dog, but Rockstar hasn't said so.
What's not confirmed
- Selling meat or pelts, crafting, or animal quality ratings
- Legendary animals
- Bows or traps for hunting
- Animals attacking you, although it's hard to imagine Grassrivers alligators staying peaceful
- Owning a pet
Worth knowing: the Extended Look didn't actually show hunting or fishing gameplay. Everything above comes from Nelson's interviews and Rockstar's screenshots and descriptions. For where these regions sit, see our GTA 6 map guide, and for the hunting rifles seen so far, the weapons list.
