You can start downloading GTA 6 on November 12, 2026, one week before it launches on November 19. Pre-loading only gets the files onto your console. The game stays locked until launch day.

Rockstar hasn't announced an unlock time yet. It may vary by region, as it did for Red Dead Redemption 2, which unlocked at midnight local time in most countries. We'll add the times here once Rockstar confirms them.
How to pre-load
Digital pre-order: the game should start downloading on its own on November 12 if automatic downloads are turned on. If nothing happens, open the game in your library and start the download manually.
Physical copy: the box contains a download code, not a disc. Stores such as GameStop and Walmart start selling it on November 12. Redeem the code in the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store and the download begins right away.
Leave the console in rest mode (PS5) or with instant-on enabled (Xbox) overnight so the download keeps going while you're not using it.
How much space do you need?
Rockstar hasn't published the file size. GTA 5 takes up more than 100 GB on current consoles, and GTA 6 has a bigger map and more detail, so plan for at least 150 GB. That's our estimate, not an official number. If Rockstar publishes the real figure, we'll replace it.
A base PS5 has roughly 667 GB of usable space and a Series S has about 364 GB. On a Series S in particular, clear space before the 12th, not on the night itself.
Checklist for launch week
- Check which edition you're buying. Our Standard vs Ultimate guide covers the differences.
- Free up at least 150 GB.
- Turn on automatic downloads, or set a reminder for November 12.
- Start the download early on the 12th. Servers will be busy that week, and the first day is usually the fastest.
- Expect a day-one patch on the 19th even if the pre-load finished. Rockstar games almost always ship one.
